Archaeology
Camp Douglas Restoration Foundation sponsors archaeological investigations or “digs” on the site of Camp Douglas. These investigations are led by Michael Gregory, Ph.D. Dr. Gregory is an experienced archaeologist and member of the board of directors of the Foundation. These investigations last from a few days to a week or more, with hours ranging from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. Volunteers are encouraged to join this team in the excavation, identification and care of artifacts found. Those participating in the “dig” are asked to be available at lease two morning or afternoon shifts during the excavation. Volunteers need no experience. Training and equipment required for the activity are provided. Since 2012, many artifacts relating to Camp Douglas have been discovered. In addition, important artifacts relating to the history of the Bronzeville community have been found.
